Workshop #359):  AN INSIDER’S GUIDE TO NEUROCARE PRO AND NEUROCAREMOTE: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO GET TO WORK NOW

NeuroCARE Pro represents the state of the art in modern neurofeedback training. Despite being based in cutting-edge analytic techniques, its underlying architecture and intuitive interface make it one of the easiest systems to learn. This means that you will be “up and running” more quickly while also learning to use state of the art comprehensive and adaptive approaches to target setting. NeuroCARE Pro uses a wide range of multimedia elements for feedback, including DVDs, MP3, MID, WAV, CD and more – and this makes the overall training experience more interesting, engaging and pleasant for your clients. The system also includes 3-D visualization techniques and advanced statistics that are not available on any other system. Whether you’re interested in applying training in the clinical world, bringing it into schools, using it to deepen meditation, or engaging in far-reaching research, NeuroCARE Pro has the tools and features to support your interest and work – including the latest and most complete system for guided neurofeedback training “at a distance.” NeuroCAREmote brings the power and precision of NeuroCARE Pro into a range of environments outside of your office – while still keeping you “in control.” Clients can only train as you think best for them – but they can utilize their favorite DVDs and music to train with state of the art precision, in the privacy of their own home. NeuroCAREmote is an elegant extension to the profound practice of neurofeedback training made possible by NeuroCARE Pro.

This seminar will show you what you need to know to learn how to bring the power of neurofeedback training into your practice quickly and easily – and then extend it into the client’s home and other arenas by using NeuroCAREmote. The reality of virtual clinics is here now.

Panel #361):  CARE® in the Real World: Outcomes From Using NeuroCARE Across the Range

The CARE® approach to neurofeedback remains unique. Approaching the task of neurofeedback as a form of “cross aerobic” training for the CNS, it is based on a fundamental understanding of how to promote both resilience and flexibility, while minimizing turbulence and instability. The name means Comprehensive, Adaptive Renormalization of EEG” and indicates that there is a single, fundamental training paradigm that is used regardless of presenting complaint, context or reason for training to be done. The CARE approach is diagnostically agnostic and does not use “site shifting” or mapping procedures to guide its use of neurofeedback training. Nor does it utilize any form of decision tree or symptom-based triage procedures to modify its approach. Instead it relies upon a dynamical matrix of 16 real-time targets the continually adapt to the changing dynamical response of the CNS during the actual training. This allows for a vastly simplified user interface – the trainer only needs to modify a single “Difficulty” factor as training proceeds – it also allows for completely novel training uses, including true, interpersonal, group-based neurofeedback. This panel will present the work of a number of trainers who are using the CARE® approach in their practices and other applied settings. QEEG-based results will be presented along with other datasets, including graphical displays of applied joint time-frequency analyses. Some areas of application that will be covered include:

Chronic Pain
Sleep Renormalization
Optimal Flow and Function
Depression and Anxiety
ADD and Related Performance Issues
Spiritual Transformation
Energetic Healing
Trauma Response
Recovery from addictive process
Cross-person, group-based neurofeedback

EEG Foundations Course #362):  CARE®: The Elegance of Non-localized and Non-Global Neurofeedback

When we provide Neurofeedback training to clients we are essentially giving information to the CNS about what it has been doing most recently. Regardless of whether one believes that training consists in “perturbing” the CNS, or “nudging” it or attempting to return it to more “normal” levels of activity, the reality is that all we need to do is give information to the CNS about what it has already done – and this allows clients to transform their lives. The question then is really: “What is the most useful, real-time information that we can provide to the CNS?” It does seem clear that, the more comprehensive the basis of the information, the more likely it is to be of real information value. This means that training can not remain overly localized either spatially or in terms of specific time-frequency targets. And yet, it also means that training can't just be "globalized" such that it lacks precision and differentiation. The CARE approach remains unique in that it not only covers the entire time-frequency range of EEG from 0-60 Hz, it also does this in an adaptive manner. This means that the process of neurofeedback can remain simple and elegant for the user, while the software handles the phenomenally complex tasks of real-time, neighborhood-based analyses of turbulence in the EEG. This allows for a neurofeedback process that is non-localized and non-global, while remaining capable and robust enough to be used across the range of situations and context in which neurofeedback has been used.

Plenary #363):  KARMA OR DHARMA: Three Acronyms That Can Clarify The Core of Neurofeedback Training

In this field we have a lot of theories – and we seem to continue to reinvent a number of wheels. Coming from a largely Western basis, and with a belief in a particular application of the scientific method, it seems that many can easily forget the depths of prior, well established approaches to understanding and promoting the process of personal transformation. However, this is changing and increasingly modern science has come face to face with its own reflection in several ancient mirrors – most notably Buddhist practice. Karma and Dharma are two fundamental concepts in Buddhist practice. The first refers to the repetitive patterns of cause and effect the re-create habitual cycles of suffering, while the second refers to the precise view and practice that leads to the realization of releasing such suffering. In the Buddhist view we remain in the choice point of Karma (ie repeating our past suffering) or Dharma (ie stepping off of the wheel that recreates our suffering). It is that “OR” that remains critical for we always have a choice: Karma or Dharma. But we can make these ideas a little more approachable by seeing them as acronyms. Karma: Kontinued Affective Re-triggering Maintains Attachment. Dharma: Disrupting Habitual Affective Re-triggering Maintains Aliveness. And the “OR”? It refers to the two fundamental operations of the CNS that are most critical to successful neurofeedback training: viz, the Orienting Response and the Relaxation Response. We can choose to either repeat our past – and recreate the attachments we have to our own history and experience of suffering – OR we can choose to release that process of attaching by disrupting it, as it begins to reappear, and thereby return to the aliveness of the present. We do this in neurofeedback by providing audiovisual events that disrupt that process of Affective Re-triggering, invoking the Orienting Response (to directly perceive the relative safety of the present) and thereby invoking the Relaxation Response – when the CSN recognizes and experiences the safety of the training environment. This presentation will explore this set of ideas and present them as a fundamental way to understand what is happening across the range of neurofeedback training.
