Plenary #275): Spiritual Healing Through Neurofeedback: The Essentials of Neurotheology
For thousands of years enlightened individuals have attempted to impart their knowledge to others by codifying the methods used to achieve higher states of consciousness. The paths are numerous but all have a fundamental aim: to change the human beings nervous system in such a manner that higher states of consciousness become accessible to the individual. In order to induce neurological change in the individual from the outside, these ancient sciences used geometric structures and designs like many of the great cathedrals, temples and pyramids. To produce neurological change from the inside, there arose many sacred teachings and scriptures detailing methods, rituals, mantras, yoga's, and esoteric alchemical traditions, just to name a few. The common theme of all these methods is to change, transform, and refine the brain and nervous system so that a human beings innate divine potential can be realized.
Martin Wuttke will discuss how a 'meditation model' for brainwave biofeedback training (neurofeedback) is teaching individuals to move their brains from survival and instinctual functions to higher states of consciousness. Recent research has verified that the brains of meditators change in both structure and function compared to the norm. For example, the frontal lobes of the brain, used for focus, creativity and motivation actually thicken over time. Concurrently, the more primitive structures in the brain dealing with fear responses, 'fight or flight', and survival mechanisms come under greater control. This model, using neurofeedback, accelerates the same neurological and psychological changes that occur from the practice of meditation.
